Theres
encouraging news to report in Delaware when it comes to cancer mortality.
After consistently placing among the top 5 highest states in the country
for cancer mortality during the 90s, Delaware now shows steady
improvement. In fact, Delawares rate of improvement in cancer deaths now
leads the country.
Here are a few facts of interest:
- Comparing 2005 with 1990, there was
an overall increase in cancer deaths nationwide of 2.7 per 100,000
population.
-
During this period, 16 states
experienced a decreased death rate. Delaware, New York and Maryland led
the most improved category (a decrease of more than 12 deaths per
100,000).
-
From 2004 to 2005 there was a
nationwide decrease in the cancer death rate of .5 deaths per 100,000.
Delaware and Utah led the way with a decline of more than 7 deaths per
100,000.
We still have a long way to go, but
continued success is achievable thanks to screening programs, free cancer
treatment for uninsured Delawareans for up to a year and other
statewide cancer initiatives. Thats good news, indeed, and news we trust
will only get better.
