Exercising doesn't have to be hard or time consuming.
Simple exercises, done as little as 30 minutes a day three times a week, have been shown to help:

  • Reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke.
  • Improve your mobility.
  • Cut your risk for developing diabetes.
  • Reduce the discomfort of arthritis.
  • Help control existing diabetes.
  • Minimize the effects of aging.

Fitness and Exercise

Long-term studies show extensive medical benefits of exercise for both young and old. Regular exercise not only may help you live a longer, healthier life, but it's important if you have a chronic disease. Regardless of your reasons for exercise, all of us need the following basic elements to develop healthy functioning bodies; cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.

It is important to learn about personal and familial risk factors to determine your risk, and then check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. Your doctor may decide for you to undergo an exercise test before you start your program. Once you are ready to get started, you may want to meet with a certified instructor, take a class or join a fitness center run. By doing this you will be able to access the advise and guidance of a trained fitness staff who can help you meet your fitness goals and avoid any injuries.

Christiana Care's Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute offers a personalized and medically supervised Exercise Services program, staffed by experienced exercise physiologists and specially-trained fitness instructors. Our team will develop a fitness program that fits your health needs and limitations, helping you to improve your ability to perform daily activities and and hopefully lower your dependence on medications.
