Swine Flu/H1N1 and New Guidelines for Visitors

Our care begins with a personal sleep history, medical background and physical examination. If appropriate, a polysomnography (sleep study) may be ordered to enable us to monitor and record your brain waves, heart rate, blood oxygen level, breathing and eye movements. This study is done in a natural sleeping environment. With this information, our sleep experts can determine the source of a sleep problem and begin treatment to help make a good night's sleep a safe and natural part of your daily life.

Sound sleep can be second nature
Like food and water, sleep is one of our most basic needs. But for more than one-third of us, sleep problems make a good night's rest an impossible dream.

Sleepless nights create round-the-clock problems
If you have a sleeping disorder, you know the personal difficulties it can cause in your life. Fatigue, irritability and social embarrassment can affect your ability to accomplish simple tasks others do easily.

Effective, personalized treatment by a caring staff of sleep specialists The Sleep Disorders Center's multidisciplinary diagnosis approach teams medical experts with experience in every kind of sleep problem. Working closely with you and your loved ones, our sleep center team provides the most effective treatments available.

Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a sudden, uncontrollable attack of sleep. Narcolepsy may be hereditary and usually appears in early adult years. It affects one in 100,000 people. The most common symptoms include:

  • Excessive daytime sleeping.
  • Sudden loss of muscle control that can cause a person to fall down during moments of high emotion.
  • Vivid, dream-like hallucinations while the person is awake.
  • Body paralysis lasting from a few seconds to several minutes after awakening from a sleep attack.

A variety of treatment options exist to alleviate the symptoms of narcolepsy, including psychological support for the personal difficulties that often arise at home and work.

Other sleep problems
Problems that interrupt a good night's sleep may also include night terrors, nightmares, sleep walking, chest pain, bedwetting or teeth grinding.

The physicians at the Sleep Disorders Center can recommend an appropriate treatment program for every kind of sleep problem.

Follow-up treatment and support
The staff of the Christiana Care Sleep Disorders Center works closely with referring physicians. Once tests and treatments are completed, the Sleep Disorders Center sends a comprehensive report to your referring physician for careful review with you.

Sleep apnea
Persons who experience sleep apnea frequently stop breathing during sleep. This chronic problem makes blood oxygen levels fall below normal, which awakens the sleeper. People with sleep apnea may experience loud snoring, choking and gasping as they try to catch their breath.

Persons suffering from sleep apnea often start out in the morning feeling tired and may crave sleep throughout the day. Prolonged periods of apnea can harm the cardiovascular system and lead to high blood pressure, headaches and decreased mental efficiency.

Treatment for sleep apnea varies with the individual. Noninvasive treatments, including the nasal CPAP device, often produce improvement in a short period of time.

Insomnia
By far the most common sleep problem, insomnia is a disruption in the normal sleep pattern. People with insomnia have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. During the day, they may try to catch up on sleep by taking naps.

Insomnia is sometimes a symptom of underlying illness or depression. However, like other sleep disorders, insomnia is treatable once our Sleep Disorders Center team has identified the cause.
