Christiana Care ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, Jay
Luft, M.D., advises that treating chronic or recurrent sinus problems
may need the special knowledge and training of an ENT doctor. 'Generally
a sinus infection can be treated with antibiotics to kill the
bacteria, and oral nasal decongestants or sprays can unclog stuffy noses,' he
says, 'but, sometimes surgery may be necessary to improve sinus drainage
or to correct an anatomical defect that may be causing the problem.'

Using computer-guided technology for most serious cases to offer
patients the most precise surgery available
Patients with severe sinus problems that require surgical intervention now
have a haven at the new Christiana Care ENT/Sinus Surgery Center located at
Wilmington Hospital. The Center recently upgraded its existing state-of-the-art
surgical technology and is designed to treat the most serious sinus cases.
Superior capabilities The Center was designed for
patients with acute sinus infections or structural problems who have conditions
that need to be approached surgically.
Staffed with experienced surgeons committed to
providing a positive experience for patients throughout their entire continuum
of care.
Highly trained nurses and support staff possess
special expertise in the treatment of patients with significant sinus disease.
Unique place where patients can receive expert
treatment in the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases.
The most advanced technology, such as the
computer-guided VTI InstaTrack System.
The Center will provide more than just sinus surgery, other ENT surgery
will be performed as well.
Sinus Specific Anesthesia Certain
anesthesia procedures may be recommended for your surgery, you can learn more about
them here.
On track The InstaTrack
digital system provides
physicians with a three-dimensional 'road map' of the operation area. It enables
a surgeon to correlate the patient's anatomy as seen through a 4-millimeter
endoscope and camera with high-resolution CAT scan images.
The system's up-to-date instrumentation offers more exact localization of
disease, more precise and minimally invasive surgery accomplished through much
smaller incisions, decreased pain and greater long-term symptom control.
The technology also minimizes risk, revision sinus surgery and surgery in the
frontal area can be challenging. The surgery takes place near the eye and the
brain, so we want to make it as safe as we possibly can.
Future goals As for the future, the Center is moving
toward a center of excellence as the national criteria become established. Right
now, criteria for centers of excellence for sinus surgery are in the first
stages of development. Christiana Care is participating in that process.
The Center is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Patients have the availability of 23-hour 59-minute post-op admission or
admission to the hospital as needed.
