Emergency Medicine

Neil Jasani, M.D.
Program Director

Our Department of Emergency Medicine was established in 1976 and graduated the first two EM residents in 1983.  Since that time, our graduating class has grown to 12 per year.  Our EM/IM program started in 1991 with 1 resident per year and now accepts 3 per year.  We are also the first in the country to offer an EM/FM program (2007), 2 positions per year.  After completing our programs, graduates usually enter careers in academic, clinical and administrative emergency medicine.  Many have entered fellowships in emergency medical services, toxicology, sports medicine, research, critical care and occupational medicine.

The strength of our residency program lies in the vast and varied clinical exposure and in our academic curriculum.  The curriculum can be tailored to suit individual training needs, while preserving a solid clinical foundation.  After three years of training, residents are qualified to practice and/or teach state-of-the-art emergency medicine whenever they choose.

Accreditation

Christiana Care's Emergency Medicine Residency Program received unconditional approval to continue for five years (the maximum possible) by the Residency Review Commission for Emergency Medicine (RRC-EM) in 2002.

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers 12 appointments to its three-year categorical program and three appointments to a five-year combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Program.
