Christiana Care Physical Therapy
Recovering From Hip or Knee Surgery
Physical therapy is an essential part of your recovery following knee or hip replacement, or other joint surgery. Our therapists are experts in joint-replacement rehabilitation. We work closely with Christiana Care's Center for Advanced Joint Replacment, but you do not have to be a Center for Advanced Joint Replacement patient to come to us for your physical therapy.
We can help you to reduce pain and discomfort, and regain the strength and range of motion needed to perform all the activities you enjoy.
You will work with your therapist on:
- Gait training, including the use of a walker or cane if needed.
- Improving your ability to carry out activities of daily living.
- Posture retraining.
- Therapeutic exercise.
- Developing a home exercise program that will empower you to continue your progress toward a pain-free life.
Although each person's recovery process is unique, a typical physical therapy regimen after a total knee replacement is two to three visits a week for four to six weeks. A total hip replacement tends to be easier. Some patients do not require therapy at all after leaving the hospital, while others may need two to three weeks of therapy following surgery.
