For Health Professionals

Scholarly Activity

A weekly lecture series offers the fellows the opportunity to prepare and present topics in sports medicine and to receive interdisciplinary education in all areas of sports medicine. Faculty and guest lecturers participate in the discussions. Our orthopaedic faculty present a weekly focused topic lecture on musculoskeletal medicine after the Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center hours. There is also a monthly case conference series where faculty and fellows take turns presenting interesting cases.

We hold several combined lecture series with other programs, such as a monthly radiology series combined with the radiology residency program and presented by our musculoskeletal radiologist. Journal club is held as a series of interdepartmental and regional events.

Research

Scholarly activity and research is integral to the Sports Medicine Fellowship and is assisted by the Health Services Research Group within the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Affiliation agreements with Delaware State University and University of Delaware present opportunities for clinical practice, research and education of residents and fellows. Opportunities also exist for fellows to pursue research with nationally recognized faculty under the auspices of our Christiana Care Center for Outcomes Research.

Conference attendance

The fellows attend the Fellows Research Conference, sponsored by the AMSSM, at the beginning of their fellowship year. Case submissions to AMSSM or AOASM are an expected result of the fellowship year.

Teaching

The fellows are involved in several teaching opportunities during the course of the year. Community lectures to coaches, parents and others occur through Sports Medicine Services and the Wellness Center. Presentations are provided to athletic trainers, nurses, nurse practitioners and other ancillary health care providers on specific musculoskeletal, medical or health and fitness topics. Medical student and resident lectures to family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery are given throughout the fellowship year.
