System Learning
Our Purpose
System Learning at Christiana Care Health System helps advance our Great Place to Work culture and facilitate the delivery of our Focus on Excellence goals. Our purpose is to enable personal growth and organizational transformation through learning to achieve higher levels of performance.
Our Vision
We strive to be recognized as a "people developer" learning organization and as a culturally competent healthcare leader that provides ongoing growth opportunities to our colleagues and excellent service and care to our patients and community.
Our Mission
- Grow leadership capacity to deliver our Focus on Excellence goals and foster a Great Place to Work
- Implement strategies and programs to continue evolving our culture to accelerate transformation in the areas of change, learning, and coaching
- Develop our colleagues at all levels to be the best they can be while implementing a system-wide learning strategy
- Advance workforce diversity and inclusion and become a leader in culturally competent healthcare

Coaching and Career Development
As we focus on the development of our middle management team, we have established the expectation that leaders will develop others and act as coaches to effect visible changes in the execution of our Leadership Behaviors. We have implemented group and team coaching as part of the 360 competency assessment process, and launched Specialized Coaching for "Creating a Great Place to Work: Develops People and Creates High Performance Teams".
Whole Brain Thinking (HBDI)
Because development and growth begins with self-awareness, we have implemented the "Whole Brain Thinking - HBDI" program for individuals and teams throughout Christiana Care.
The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument is the world's leading thinking preference assessment tool and identifies each person's instinctive approach to thought: Emotional, Analytical, Structural or Strategic. Over 1200 employees have learned about their own thinking styles and how utilizing "Whole Brain Thinking" can benefit them individually and their teams.
Cultural Competency / Diversity and Inclusion
Employee Experience and Onboarding
"Onboarding" refers to the process of integrating new employees into the organization, preparing them to succeed at their jobs, and helping them become fully engaged, productive members of the organization. Successful onboarding makes the mission and vision come alive for new employees and helps them gain an understanding of key behaviors that contribute to the mission.
Other key elements of a successful process are clear expectations of service excellence for our customers and colleagues, and descriptions of future opportunities to grow and develop within the organization. All of these create an engaging and positive employee experience which benefits the employee, the organization, and ultimately, our patients and customers.
At Christiana Care, onboarding includes the following:
- New Employee Orientation
- Department Orientation
- Position-Specific Orientation
- Ongoing developmental and educational opportunities as a part of any position prepara tion, enhancement and/or transition
