Interventional Catheterization

Last year we performed 5,981 cardiac catheterizations in Christiana Care's Cardiac Catheterization labs. We also placed 3,403 stents.

The cardiac catheterization lab at Christiana Hospital specializes in the latest methods for evaluating and treating coronary artery disease.

What is a cardiac catheterization?
By inserting a fiber-thin catheter into the groin area and feeding it up toward the heart, cardiologists can insert dyes into the coronary arteries to locate, and often clear away, potentially life-threatening blockages. The images produced by this procedure help cardiologists diagnose just how extensive the coronary artery disease is, and help them determine the most effective type of treatment.

Our cardiologists are among the region's most experienced in diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures. Our spacious catheterization labs have today's most advanced technology for performing all major cardiac catheterization procedures currently in use.

  • Diagnostic catheterization.
  • Balloon angioplasty.
  • Intravascular ultrasound techniques.
  • Peripheral vascular angioplasty.
  • Rotational and directional atherectomy.
  • Stent placement.

A further assurance of quality

Every Christiana Care cardiologist performs a minimum of 100 angioplasties every year to ensure superior clinical skills. That's more experience, per doctor, at Christiana Care than the entire staff has at many hospitals. In caring for your heart, there's no substitute for experience.
