S. Eric Martin, M.D.
An experienced hematologist/oncologist in the field of "hematopoietic stem cell transplantation" with Christiana Care's Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, Dr. Eric Martin specializes in the treatment of leukemia, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, genetic risk assessment, molecular diagnostics, anemia, thrombosis and coagulation disorders.
Dr. Martin has a long and prestigious history with Christiana Care, having served as its director of Blood Bank and Transfusion Services; co-director of the Clinical Bone Marrow Transplantation program; and section chief of both the Bone Marrow Transplantation Cell Processing Laboratory; and the Molecular Diagnostics Section. Prior to his arrival at Christiana Care (then the Medical Center of Delaware) in the mid 1980s, Dr. Martin practiced at Gaston Memorial Hospital in North Carolina.
In addition to serving on the active staff of both the Departments of Medicine and Pathology with Christiana Care Health System, Dr. Martin is a clinical associate professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He previously served as an instructor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, the same program where he held both a clinical and a research fellowship in hematology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Martin has authored numerous journal articles and led many research studies. Currently, he serves as the clinical investigator for Christiana Care's Community Clinical Oncology Program for the Cancer and Acute Leukemia Group B/ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group), and is the responsible investigator for the Provenge Cellular Prostate Cancer Immunotherapy Trial in Delaware. Current research activity also includes both the characterization of a unique BRCA1 mutation in a family of African-American descent; and of a unique chromosomal translocation in a patient with a myeloproliferative syndrome (studying the disorder in the rate of formation of bone marrow cells).
A past member of the Medical Advisory Board and Board of Directors for the Blood Bank of Delaware, Dr. Martin belongs to the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, the International Society for Hematotherapy & Graft Engineering, the American Society of Human Genetics, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association of Blood Banks, the Medical Society of Delaware and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Martin graduated magna cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, where he also earned his medical degree. He served his internship and residency at Rochester General Hospital in New York. Dr. Martin is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Internal Medicine (Hematology) and the American Board of Pathology in Blood Banking.
