David D. Biggs, M.D.
Chief, Medical Oncology
David Biggs, M.D., came to Christiana Care in 1994, when he joined a private practice with ties to the health system. He was appointed chief of the Oncology Section in 2007. His responsibilities include representing the Oncology Section at Department of Medicine Executive Committee meetings and running quarterly section meetings. He also reviews and approves privileges for attending medical staff and promotes the section's goals with hospital administrators and nurses.
Dr. Biggs is a 1984 graduate of University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas. He interned at Christchurch Hospital in Christchurch, New Zealand the next year. In 1985, he started his residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He was chief resident from 1988 to 1989. He completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1992.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Biggs worked for two years as an assistant professor of medicine in the Hematology/Oncology Division at the University of Pennsylvania. Then he moved to Delaware to become a practicing oncologist. He practices with Medical Oncology Hematology Consultants, which is on the Christiana Hospital campus in the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center. The practice specializes in diagnosing and treating cancer and blood disorders.
Dr. Biggs has a special interest in breast cancer. He serves on a national committee that develops clinical trials for patients with this disease. The committee was formed through a large cooperative clinical trials group that was chartered by the National Cancer Institute to do clinical research about breast and colorectal cancer. His other special interests include kidney cancer and the most serious type of skin cancer, melanoma.
Dr. Biggs is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Physicians and American Society of Hematology. He is president of the Delaware Society of Clinical Oncology. He also has served on an American Society of Clinical Oncology committee that advises the group on issues affecting private practices.
