Margaret E. Keenan, Ph.D.
Director, Health Psychology
Margaret Keenan, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and director of Health Psychology at Christiana Care's Eugene du Pont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute.
She received her doctorate in clinical psychology at Temple University in 1992 and joined Christiana Care in 1997. Prior to coming to Christiana Care, she worked at Temple University Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital and the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Keenan works primarily with people who have cardiac disease, diabetes, obesity and other chronic illnesses or medical conditions. Her goal is to help patients cope with the emotional and behavioral challenges associated with health problems in order to achieve the best possible quality of life. Dr. Keenan also treats individuals who are striving to improve their health habits so they can decrease their risk of future illness. She has expertise in smoking cessation, weight loss, sleep disorders and stress management/relaxation training. She works with individuals and groups.
Dr. Keenan is particularly interested in mind/body interventions in the field of integrative medicine. She is certified in clinical hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. She has completed a certificate series in cognitive-behavioral therapy at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has also trained in mindfulness-based therapies at several well-respected institutions in the field, including the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School; Penn Program for Mindfulness at University of Pennsylvania; University of California San Diego School of Medicine; and Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Keenan is a popular speaker for community groups and corporations, focusing on topics related to health psychology and workplace stress and wellness.
She has worked as an adjunct faculty member for the master's degree program in health psychology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Keenan is a member of the American Psychological Association, Delaware Psychological Association, American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. She is licensed in Delaware and Pennsylvania.
