Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine Residency

Christiana Care Health System has developed a cutting-edge, exciting, unprecedented new opportunity for individuals wishing to pursue dual training and dual board eligibility in emergency medicine and family medicine. The creation of the five-year Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine Residency Program is the first allopathic program of its kind in the country and will graduate its first resident in 2012. Two positions are offered each academic year in the combined program, and appointments are made via the allopathic match.

By offering a comprehensive, cohesive curriculum that utilizes the talents, resources and strengths of each individual department, we are able to integrate these two powerful and critically important areas of medicine into a unified and highly individualized residency training experience. This innovative training opportunity is designed to equip physicians with the experience, skill sets and knowledge base to be able to navigate and manage a vast array of patient-care needs. Such a broad spectrum ranges from acute injury and critical care as seen in the emergency department to the complete management and care of patients as individuals, as well as in the context of family and community, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The primary mission is to train highly dedicated and versatile physicians who will be well suited to meet and challenge the growing demands of our dynamic health care environment. With the crises that currently exist in emergency departments and primary-care offices, the inception of this program ensures that there will be qualified physicians to fill a unique niche and advocate for patients as a liaison between emergent and primary care.

Training takes place under the direct supervision and guidance of both specialties equally and is specifically designed to provide an optimal educational experience. Ultimately, graduates of this program will have the choice of practicing in either one or both specialties in academic or community hospital settings. The option also exists to further pursue subspecialty training, fellowship or clinical research interests.

Lisa Maxwell, M.D., program director for the Family Medicine Residency, and Neal Jasani, M.D., program director for the Emergency Medicine Residency serve as collaborative co-directors for the combined EM/FM program. We invite you to take a closer look at the groundbreaking Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine Residency Program at Christiana Care and all it has to offer. Thank you for your interest in our program.

Accreditation

The combined Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine Residency Program is approved by both the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine, and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. At the end of the five-year program, graduates will be qualified and eligible to sit for board certification in both emergency medicine and family medicine.

Two appointments each year are offered to the combined, five-year Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine Residency Program.
