About Our Location
Two hours is all it takes to drive across Delaware. But in this short trip, you find a diversity of places to live, work and play.
From the high rises, corporate offices and art scene in Wilmington to the sand, surf and tax-free outlet shopping in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware lives up to its "Small Wonder" nickname. In between, you find everything from suburban homes and shopping malls to small towns, state parks and family-run farms.
Christiana Care's two hospital campuses are in New Castle County. More than 60 percent of the state's residents live here. Wilmington is its urban hub. In the city, housing options range from new condominiums on the riverfront to historic row homes in tree-lined neighborhoods. The surrounding suburbs include well-maintained older homes and new construction. Public, private and parochial schools are spread throughout these communities, and the University of Delaware is nearby in Newark.
This northernmost county at the edge of the Brandywine Valley is home to the international headquarters for scientific innovator DuPont and the U.S. headquarters for pharmaceutical maker AstraZeneca. Bank of America and Chase operate financial centers here. Wilmington is also an internationally-known center for corporate law because of this concentration of corporate offices.
Cultural and recreational opportunities are abundant. New Castle County has numerous theaters that feature traveling Broadway shows, popular entertainers, a symphony, opera and ballet. Museums collections range from early American decorative arts to mollusks. Sports enthusiasts can catch collegiate games at the University of Delaware, and nearby Philadelphia is home to several professional sports teams, including the Eagles and Phillies. The many state parks are ideal for hiking, jogging, cycling, kayaking and playing recreational sports.
Travel by car to some of the East Coast's largest cities is convenient from New Castle County. Philadelphia is 30 minutes away, and Baltimore is one hour away. Washington, D.C., and New York City are a little more than two hours away. Train and air travel also are easily accessible via the Amtrak station in Wilmington and international airports in Philadelphia and the Baltimore-Washington corridor.
