What is Christiana Care looking for in a resident?
We are looking for someone who is knowledgeable, compassionate and empathetic. It is very important that our new interns be good colleagues to current house staff. We want our residents to be described as "smart, enthusiastic, conscientious, energetic team players."
What can I expect in the patient population?
Christiana Care Health System is a primary and tertiary care referral center for a diverse population from urban, suburban and rural areas. Residents play a significant role in the diagnosis and management of both private and Adult Medicine Office (clinic) patients.
What is the role of the attending physicians?
The primary role of the attendings in relation to our residents is teaching. Most departments have daily morning reports and regular attending rounds which consist of case presentations, discussions and bedside visits to patients. Most departments sponsor noon specialty conferences as well, open to all interested residents, with lunch usually provided.
What are the on-call responsibilities?
While there may be requirements specific to each department, residents are generally responsible for work-ups and calls on patients admitted to their service. In addition, interns are required to participate in all "codes blue." Interns work under the close supervision of upper-year residents, who function as the admitting residents for the service when on call. On-call faculty are available by phone at all times.
Are residents supported by appropriate ancillary staff?
Yes. We have 24-hour per day EKG technicians and respiratory therapists, as well as phlebotomy, IV, blood gas and patient escort teams.
Is it hard to find housing and is it expensive?
No to both questions. There are several apartment complexes within a 10-minute drive from the hospital. Monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment runs between $600-800.
How much vacation time is provided?
Two to three weeks per year (depending on the department) is provided, plus one week of conference time. Each resident is provided with an annual stipend for conference expenses.
Are there employment opportunities for my spouse in Delaware?
Absolutely. Wilmington is a thriving business community with exceptional career opportunities in banking, law, chemical engineering, education, pharmaceuticals, retail, hospitality and, of course, health care. We're also located within easy commuting distance of Philadelphia and Baltimore.
