Post-Residency Opportunities
Hospitalist opportunities
Christiana Care Health System has had an active hospitalist service since 1996. There are 22 hospitalists on staff in the Department of Medicine, eight of whom are dedicated to the teaching program on an ongoing basis. Residents have ample opportunity to develop an understanding of and expertise in the field of hospitalist medicine through both a hospitalist rotation as well as frequent contact with faculty hospitalists. As a result, in recent years, 25 percent of graduating residents have accepted highly competitive hospitalist positions throughout the country.
Fellowship opportunities
On average, almost half of medicine residents in recent years have chosen to pursue subspecialty fellowship training after completing the program. These residents are encouraged to undertake appropriate research projects with subspecialty mentors and have had extraordinary success in obtaining fellowship positions at prestigious institutions throughout the country.
Primary-care training and career opportunities
The Department of Medicine provides outstanding training for those who choose primary care after residency. Post-residency professional opportunities flourish locally and throughout the country, in group practices, Christiana Care's primary-care network and HMOs.

- Residents are offered practice management seminars, inpatient and outpatient subinternships and electives in all subspecialties.
- Christiana Care's strong community ties enable residents to spend time with community groups such as Planned Parenthood and the Visiting Nurse Association, a member of the Christiana Care Health System.
