Christiana Care Maternity

Breastfeeding Support

For the good health of babies and their mothers, we encourage new mothers to breastfeed, when possible, and we offer a support network to make it an easy, enjoyable experience for you and your baby.

Our experienced nurses are certified lactation consultants, ready to help you with any challenges you may have in breastfeeding or weaning your baby. Lactation consultants can offer hands-on help with breastfeeding problems and are available for appointments at the Breastfeeding Education and Resource Center at Christiana Hospital. The Breastfeeding Education and Resource Center provides:

  • Education about breastfeeding.
  • Emotional support and encouragement.
  • Advice for handling physical discomforts, such as soreness or tenderness when breastfeeding.
  • Answers about breastfeeding problems or concerns.
  • Suggestions for starting formula/solid foods and weaning.
  • Tips for breastfeeding multiples (twins, triplets, etc.).
  • Health advice for mothers at high risk (age, chronic illness, or other medical conditions).
  • Help for mothers with babies in special care.
  • Discounted breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies and rentals.

Please call 302-733-3360 with any breastfeeding questions. We are available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. only.

There is a free breastfeeding support group for breastfeeding moms, every Monday in the Women's Building at Christiana Hospital, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Peer counselors for WIC-eligible moms

WIC peer counselors are mothers who have breast-fed their own babies. They educate and connect with new moms and mothers-to-be, helping them to become more confident and comfortable with learning to breastfeed.

WIC peer counselors can also offer:

  • Tips for how to breastfeed comfortable and discreetly, even in public.
  • Ways to stay close to your baby through breastfeeding, even after you return to work or school.
  • Ideas for getting support from family and friends.
  • Advice for helping your body to make plenty of breast milk for your baby.

To learn more about WIC peer counselors, call 302-733-4151.
