Kidney Transplant Program

After Surgery

You will not be allowed to drive for the first four to six weeks after surgery.

A transplant requires a significant amount of follow-up care after you leave the hospital. Although each patient has different needs, our team will follow your recovery in our outpatient clinic for the first six months after the transplant. The number of times you visit the clinic typically decreases in frequency during this time.

After six months, we will alternate your follow-up care with your pre-transplant nephrologist. After the first year, our team will see you two to four times a year, depending on your medical needs. You will also receive ongoing education about taking medications to prevent your body from rejecting the organ, and to prevent bacterial infections and viruses. Our team will continue to monitor your use of any medications you began taking before the transplant.

You may need periodic biopsies. You also may need to return to the hospital if you develop complications from the transplant.
