Special Cancer Outreach Programs
The outreach programs that we offer continually change in response to the changing health needs of the community. Here are just a few of the special outreach programs that you can access:
Avon Helping Hands for Breast Health
By providing education and support for getting mammograms, Christiana Care and the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund's Helping Hands for Breast Health program helps women to detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. This program provides assistance with transportation, funding and access to care. Call the breast-screening coordinator at 302-623-4746 for more information. A bilingual Spanish/English navigator is also available to assist you.
Cancer Kits to Go
Upon request, we loan displays and brochures to faith-based organizations, schools and other community groups that want to raise awareness about a variety of cancers. Contact us to find out how your organization can get involved.
Colon Cancer Awareness
Colon cancer is the most preventable cancer. Colon cancer often has no symptoms, so it is important to have your colon checked, starting at about age 50. If you have rectal bleeding, stomach cramps, weight loss, a change in bowel habits or are feeling tired, check with a doctor right away. Talk with your doctor about the need for colon cancer screening. The screening test can help keep you from getting colon cancer, or it can find colon cancer early when it can be cured. To learn about the Champions of Change program to access colon cancer screening, call 302-623-4661.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine Program
Human Papillomavirus, or HPV, is the virus that causes cervical cancer. HPV is the most commonly transmitted sexual infection, and most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it. Our HPV Vaccine Program educates young girls and their parents about HPV and provides access to the vaccine.
Komen Pink Ribbon
Is it time for you to schedule your first or follow-up mammogram? Christiana Care patient navigators make it easy for you to receive these important screening services. Patient navigators can assist you by scheduling your appointment, finding transportation and even helping to find funding, if needed. Our Pink Ribbon Program offers special appointments on the second Tuesday and third Thursday of each month at Wilmington Hospital. Our bilingual Spanish/English speaking navigator is available to assist you with scheduling your mammogram and be with you during your screening. Call 302-623-4746 to schedule your mammogram or for more information. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Philadelphia affiliate helps fund the bilingual navigator program.
Warriors Against Prostate Cancer
The goal of the Warriors Against Prostate Cancer program is to help men understand and make informed decisions about testing-especially men at high risk for prostate cancer. The men who volunteer for this program act as ambassadors in the community, providing information about what prostate-cancer screenings include and where they can be accessed. The Warriors Against Prostate Cancer effort focuses on African-American men in particular, because they are more likely than any other group to die from prostate cancer.
